Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes OR Expansion at Williamsport Regional Medical Center

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed an expansion to the Operating Suite at Williamsport Regional Medical Center in Williamsport, PA.

The project was the interior fit out of over 25,000 square feet of existing shell space within the patient tower and contains three new operating rooms, two heart catheterization labs, two EP Labs (one operational and one future) and 33 new Pre-OP and PACU bays. The project required significant upgrades and modifications to existing mechanical and electrical systems serving occupied areas. Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Medical Office Building for Mount Nittany Health

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed renovations of an existing bank into the new Mount Nittany Health – Penns Valley medical office building.

"This project was extremely important to Mount Nittany Health because of the focus and opportunity to expand primary care. Alexander Building Construction Co. Hires New Project Engineer

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, is pleased to announce the hiring of Ryan Althoff as a Project Engineer. Althoff will be responsible for reviewing shop drawings, submittals and RFIs and updating the project schedules on various projects. He will also perform field quality control inspections.

Althoff has over 5 years of experience in the construction industry. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from Penn State University. He is currently working on the WellSpan York Hospital Emergency Department Expansion project and the Penn State York Campus Ruhl Center Expansion. Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Hires New MEP manager

Alexander Building Construction Co., as part of The Butz Family of Companies, is pleased to announce the hiring of David Sillner as a manager of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems. Sillner will be responsible for ensuring that all MEP requirements are met on Alexander projects.

Sillner has over 11 years of experience in the construction industry, most recently working on the new Millenium Sciences Center and HUB Expansion project for The Pennsylvania State University. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Holds Subcontractor Appreciation Luncheon

On Tuesday, September 22, Alexander Building Construction Co. held a Subcontractor Appreciation Luncheon at The Country Club of Harrisburg in Harrisburg, PA. More than 90 people were in attendance at the event.

Alexander holds the annual luncheon in recognition of the pivotal roles that local subcontractors and suppliers play in helping the company offer superior construction management services.

Alexander Building Construction Completes Lycoming College Residence Hall Renovation

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently completed renovations to Wesley Residence Hall at Lycoming College. Alexander provided full preconstruction and construction services on the project.

Wesley Hall, originally built in 1956, was completely renovated in three months this summer. The 27,730 sq. ft. renovation included the conversion of the existing double-room dormitory layout into suite-style living quarters with private bathrooms. Alexander Building Construction Co. and the rest of The Butz Family of Companies know that achieving success and 100% client satisfaction goes beyond just the actual construction. That is why we aim to leave a positive impact on everyone we meet on our projects, be it an Owner representative, end-user, or even a three-year-old patient.

Recently, one of our superintendents, Mark Badorf, went out of his way to make the day of Owen Lewis, a patient in Pediatric Rehabilitation at WellSpan York Hospital. Alexander Building Construction Completes Lycoming College Science Building Project

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently completed an addition to Lycoming College’s science building in Williamsport, PA.

The new Lynn Science Center, a three-story, 31,500 square-foot addition connects to the north side of the existing science building. It includes space for the school’s Astronomy, Geology and Physics programs.

"We are excited to unveil this state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory space to our faculty and students," saidJeff Bennett, VP of Finance and Administration at Lycoming College. "I'm confident the new addition will aid our current students in achieving their academic goals and will be a strong incentive for prospective students. Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently launched a Special Services Group in its State College location. This division of Alexander's construction management firm will focus on providing exceptional restoration and renovation services and interiors work to the region's residential and commercial property owners.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Begins Greenhouse Renovations at Penn State

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently began a construction management project for The Pennsylvania State University. The project entails renovations to eight of the nine university greenhouses located near the Tyson Building.

"Our greenhouses were in need of some major renovations, and we felt the Alexander team had the thorough understanding of the project scope needed to successfully navigate the intricacies of the project," said Jeff Spackman, Project Manager for Penn State.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Expansion Project at Mount Nittany Health, and Begins Renovation Project

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed a major expansion project at Mount Nittany Health in State College, PA to the hospital’s perioperative services.

"We are constantly looking at ways to better provide healthcare services to our patients," said Harold Brungard, Vice President of Facilities and Plant Operations at Mount Nittany Health. "The perioperative services expansion helped us in that goal, and Alexander's project team echoed that sentiment through the high quality of work they put into the project."

The expansion included a new four-story, 68,000 square-foot addition as well as 10,000 square-feet of renovations to the hospital's sterile processing department. Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Breaks Ground on New Student Center for Penn State Harrisburg

Alexander Building Construction Co. attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, April 14 to commemorate the start of construction on the new Student Enrichment Center at the Penn State - Harrisburg campus. The new building will sit right in the heart of campus and will house many student activities and organizations.


Long-standing faculty members and Chancellor Mukund S. Kulkarni break ground on the new Student Enrichment Center at Penn State Harrisburg.
Features of the 70,000-square-foot project include:

The project is expected to be completed in time for the start of the Fall 2016 semester.

Dickinson College Receives LEED Gold Certification on New Sports Facility

The new Durden Athletic Training Center at Dickinson College, which was constructed by Alexander Building Construction Co., recently received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The sports facility was awarded a LEED Gold certification. Gensler was the architect on the project.

Located next to Biddle Field, the training facility provides state-of-the-art training facilities for the school's football, lacrosse and field hockey teams.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Awarded Lycoming College Residence Hall Renovation

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, was recently awarded a construction management assignment for Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. Full preconstruction and construction services will be provided for the renovation of an existing residence hall on campus.

The 27,800-square-foot renovation will be completed at Wesley Hall, originally built in 1956. The project is valued at approximately $6,000,000 and will include the conversion of the existing double-room dormitory layout into suite-style living quarters with private bathrooms. Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes ArcelorMittal Ingot Facility Expansion

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed construction of an addition to the Ingot Facility at the ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant. The longstanding partnership between ArcelorMittal and Lehigh Heavy Forge and the high strength, high tolerance products they produce, resulted in the need to expand the existing facility in Steelton.

"We are excited to now enjoy the results of nearly six years of planning, preparation and construction," said Steve Taylor, General Manager, ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant. "Alexander's project team excelled in managing all phases of the project, from design to final completion. They coordinated with our steelmaking operation throughout the project, resulting in a safe, high-quality project that meets our future production needs."

The 18,000 sf, 100-foot high addition is comprised of a structural steel frame and supported by 212 concrete-filled steel pipe micro-piles. It is designed to accommodate a one million-pound overhead crane load. Read the full press release.

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alexander Building Construction Co., Alvin H. Butz, Inc., and Shoemaker Construction Co., earned a spot on Engineering News-Record's (ENR) 2014 Top 400 Sourcebook list of the Top Contractors in General Building for their work on sports-related construction projects. They placed sixth on the list.

The construction management entity also ranked #209 on ENR's list of the Top 400 Contractors and #84 on the Top 100 Construction Management-at-Risk Firms in 2014.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Receives Prestigious Safety Award

Alexander Building Construction Co. was awarded the H.B. Alexander Trophy by the Keystone Contractors Association for the company's excellence in safety performance. This is the third straight year in which Alexander was awarded this honor.

The award, which is the highest safety award given by the Keystone Contractors Association, is given to the member company with the best safety performance with more than 100,000 man-hours worked. Alexander was presented with the award at the Keystone Contractors Association's board of directors meeting on Friday, October 24.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Begins Expansion of Emergency Department at York Hospital

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently began construction of an expansion to York Hospital's Emergency Department in York, PA.

The expansion includes 4,000 square-feet of new construction as well as 47,500 square-feet of renovations.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Construction of Café for Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed construction of a new campus café, titled the Crimson Café, for Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The 13,000 square-foot café will be able to seat more than 400 people and consist of a multi-venue food court.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Earns Recognition as One of the Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies

Alexander Building Construction Co. is proud to announce that it has made the Central Penn Business Journal's 18th annual list of the Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies. The list recognizes companies within the region that have shown increasing revenues.

In order to be eligible for consideration on the list, companies were required to show revenue of at least $500,000 in each of the fiscal years ending in 2011, 2012 and 2013 as well as revenue growth in 2013, as compared to 2011.

This is the third consecutive year that Alexander has achieved this milestone. Alexander's spot on this list is a testament to its status as one of the region’s premier construction management firms.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Replacement of Penn State Stadium Scoreboards

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently completed a replacement of the Pennsylvania State University's Beaver Stadium scoreboards in a joint venture with Barton Malow. The two existing scoreboards were replaced with larger, hi-definition units.

"Our end goal was to deliver a higher-quality venue for the thousands of fans who join our school every Saturday for Penn State football," said Jason Smith, Assistant Facilities Project Manager. "Alexander's personnel certainly delivered on that goal."

Due to the project being located in a high traffic area, careful scheduling and coordination were implemented to ensure safety throughout the project. Thomas E. Donley Achieves Certified Professional Services Marketer Designation

Tom Donley, Business Development Manager for The Butz Family of Companies, recently earned the designation of Certified Professional Services Marketer.

Tom has more than 30 years of business development experience working primarily in Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. As Business Development Manager for The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Construction of New Amphitheater

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently completed construction of the DeSoto Amphitheater for the Performing Arts for the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Millersburg, PA.

"The opening of the amphitheater is the culmination of a 5-year, 5-phase capital campaign," said Stephen Quigley, Executive Director for the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art. "It fulfills a dream to expand on the arts and environmental education in the region. Alexander Building Construction Co. received the 2014 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award for their work in Private Sector Projects under $20 million.

Alexander was awarded the honor for the construction management of the $11M Emergency Power System Improvements at WellSpan York Hospital in York, PA. Completed in October 2013, the project involved new infrastructure and significant equipment upgrades to support the hospital in the event of unexpected power failure and to allow for hospital power to be fully generated onsite if needed. This year, the firm ranked #209, besting last year's ranking of #270. It is the third straight year in which the parent company has improved its ranking and remains the only firm headquartered in the Lehigh Valley to ever be ranked.

The construction management entity enjoyed a 42% increase in total revenue from 2012, marking this the fourth year that they have enjoyed such an increase.

The 31,000 square-feet, three-story addition will connect to the north side of the existing science building. Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes New Building Addition to Church

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently completed construction of an addition to The Church of the Good Shepherd in State College, PA.

The 26,000 square-foot addition - called the Father Bender Community Center - will help the church accommodate its parishioners by providing space for religious education, social gatherings and administrative needs. It primarily features a new parish hall, which is able to seat up to 275 people and includes a full-sized, commercial kitchen.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes New Surgery Center for Geisinger Health System

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed construction of a new building addition at Geisinger Health System's Gray's Woods campus. The building addition expands the facility's outpatient surgery capabilities and consolidates surgical specialties into one location.

"Our end goal was to better accommodate the needs of the community by improving the quantity and quality of healthcare at our facility," said William J. Gladish, Associate Vice President of Facilities Construction for Geisinger Health System. "Alexander's team of experienced construction management professionals helped make that goal a reality."

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes New Spoorts Facility for Dickinson College

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed a new sports facility for Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. The facility has been named the Durden Athletic Training Center in honor of the tenure of former school president William G. Durden and his wife Dr. Elke Durden.

Located next to Biddle Field, the training facility will provide state-of-the-art training facilities for the school's football, lacrosse and field hockey teams.

Features of the training facility include:

Alexander Building Construction Co. Announces Two New Promotions

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently promoted Erica Sehar and Dennis Walter to project managers.

Sehar earned a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree from Penn State University and joined Alexander in 2008 as a project engineer. She has more than six years of construction management experience and has received a Healthcare Construction Certificate from the American Society of Healthcare Engineers (ASHE).

Walter, also a former project engineer at Alexander, earned his Master of Architectural Engineering degree from Penn State in 2010 and is affiliated with the university’s Alumni Society of Architectural Engineers. During his time with Alexander, he has worked on multiple projects for Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA, including the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion, which received a 2013 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) National Project of the Year Award. Alexander Building Construction Co. Begins Work on ArcelorMittal Ingot Facility Expansion

Alexander Building Construction Co. has begun construction of an addition to the Ingot Facility at the ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant. ArcelorMittal casts high strength steel ingots for Lehigh Heavy Forge of Bethlehem, PA. Lehigh Heavy Forge then forges the metal into complex shapes that are then machined and heat treated into high tolerance products for a variety of industries, including the Commercial Nuclear industry. The longstanding partnership between ArcelorMittal and Lehigh Heavy Forge and the high strength, high tolerance products they produce, resulted in the need to expand the existing facility in Steelton.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes New Medical Office Building for WellSpan Health

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed construction of a new medical office building in York, PA. Two medical practices affiliated with WellSpan Health are to be the new building's tenants: York Women's Health Center and York Pediatrics.

Work on the one-story, 27,500 sf facility began in early March 2013, and was completed in early December 2013. WellSpan will occupy the facility in early 2014.

Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, was awarded the H.B. Alexander Trophy by the Keystone Contractors Association for the company's excellence in safety performance. The award is given to the company with the best safety performance on its projects' sites. New Cancer Center Wins National Project of the Year Award

Mount Nittany Medical Center (MNMC) and Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, received the 2013 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) National Project of the Year Award for New Construction with a constructed value less than $25 million.

MNMC and Alexander were awarded the honor for the construction of the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion, part of Mount Nittany Health in State College, PA.

The cancer center is the only Pennsylvania-based project to receive an award in 2013, and it comes after MNMC and Alexander won CMAA's Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award for the same project.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Power Improvements for York Hospital

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed improvements to WellSpan York Hospital's Power Generation and Emergency Power Distribution System. The new infrastructure and equipment upgrades were performed to support the hospital in the event of unexpected power failure, and allow the full operating load of the facility to be generated onsite if needed.

Features of the project included:

  • Installation of a new 6.75MW power generation plant
  • New high voltage substations within the hospital
  • New and retrofitted automatic transfer switches
  • New high voltage electrical feeders within the hospital complex

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed construction of a new medical office building near Parkesburg, Chester County, PA. Numerous practices associated with Lancaster General Health are the new building's tenants.

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co., has hired Steve Kneski as a Virtual Design & Construction Modeler. Kneski will be responsible for using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other technologies to help provide current and potential clients with more detailed representations of their projects.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Breaks Ground for New Building Addition to Church

Alexander Building Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently began construction of an addition to The Church of the Good Shepherd in State College, PA. The project team mobilized on the site on Monday, August 5 and held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, August 18.

The 26,000 square-foot addition - called the Father Bender Community Center - will help the church accommodate its parishioners by providing space for religious education, social gatherings and administrative needs. It will primarily feature a new parish hall, which will be able to seat up to 275 people and include a full-sized, commercial kitchen. Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Co. is proud to announce that it has made the Central Penn Business Journal's 17th annual list of companies with increasing revenues. This is the second consecutive year that Alexander has achieved this milestone.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Wins CMAA Project of the Year Award

Alexander Building Construction Co. received the 2013 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award for their work in Private Sector Projects under $20 million.

Alexander was awarded the honor for the construction and expansion of the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA. The Butz Family of Companies earned themselves a spot on Engineering News-Record's (ENR) list of the Top 400 Contractors in 2013. This year, the firm ranked #270, besting last year's ranking of #273. Butz remains the only locally-owned firm to be consistently ranked as a Top 400 Contractor.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Phase II of Emergency Department Expansion

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed the second phase of a new and renovated emergency department expansion at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA. Phase II was started in July 2012, after occupancy of Phase I, and was completed in April 2013. Alexander worked closely with Mount Nittany Medical Center in expanding the hospital's emergency department and providing additional rooms for patients.

The entire emergency department project consisted of a phased approach to enlarge and enhance the existing emergency department with such features as a new pod design (allows for more flexible and efficient care), private patient rooms complete with private restrooms, a dedicated sexual assault nurse examiner room, two state-of-the-art trauma bays, a rooftop helipad, and expanded waiting areas for the comfort of patients' guests. Dividing the project into two phases allowed for continuous care of patients throughout the construction process. The project included 56,000 square feet of new and renovated space. Alexander Building Construction Completes Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Headquarters Renovation Project

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed the new headquarters of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO at 600 North 2nd Street in downtown Harrisburg. Built in 1926, this historic six-story steel and concrete building was originally the headquarters of the Gannett Fleming engineering firm. Renovations were performed to improve the overall appearance and functionality of the building. The scope included the complete interior demolition and fit-out of the basement, first, second and third floors for occupancy by the new owner and minor renovation of the fifth floor to prepare the space for new tenants.

Alexander Building Construction Co. promotes Dan Flickinger and Doug Workman to Senior Project Managers

During his 15 year career at Alexander, Flickinger has managed numerous successful projects for clients including the Gettysburg Hospital Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation for WellSpan Health, the Waidner Library Addition/Spahr Library Renovation at Dickinson College, the Downtown Pavilion and Queen Street Parking Garage for Lancaster General Health and multiple Beaver Stadium renovations and expansions for The Pennsylvania State University.

Currently, Flickinger is responsible for the construction of the Emergency Department Expansion at Gettysburg Hospital in Gettysburg, PA and the new Lancaster General Health Medical Office Building in Parkesburg, PA. Flickinger is stationed in Alexander’s Harrisburg office.

Workman joined Alexander in the State College office as Project Manager in April of last year.  Since then, he has worked on projects for Penn State University and Geisinger Health System.  He recently completed the new parking garage project at the Geisinger Gray’s Woods campus in State College and is currently managing the new Ambulatory Surgery Center project at the Gray’s Woods campus. Alexander Building Construction Awarded Penn State Old Main Renovation

Alexander Building Construction Co. has been selected as Construction Manager to renovate The Pennsylvania State University’s Old Main building in State College, PA. 

The Old Main building – completed in 1930 and centrally located in University Park – is one of the most significant buildings on campus and houses the offices of the university president and other administrative officials.

Renovations will provide the Old Main building occupants with both aesthetic and functional upgrades. Aesthetic upgrades include replacing the carpeting with a more historically appropriate design, installing indirect lighting to showcase the detailing on the columns and enhance the frescoes, and recreating replicas of lost fixtures with modern wiring. Functional upgrades include renovating the restrooms and making them ADA-compliant, replacing the domestic water piping system and perimeter steam radiators, and  installing state-of-the-art heating, ventilation, cooling and humidity systems  to the main lobby area to create a more comfortable environment and to stabilize the iconic Land-Grant Frescoes.  Among the largest works of their kind on any campus, the Frescoes, painted by Henry Varnum Poor in the 1940s, grace the upper walls of Old Main's lobby and pay tribute to the establishment of the University and land-grant education. Alexander Building Construction Completes York Hospital Pharmacy Renovation

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed renovations to the 7th Floor Pharmacy area at York Hospital in York, PA.

Alexander worked closely with WellSpan Health and York Hospital representatives on the project, developing a multi-phased approach to the renovation work while the pharmacy maintained operation.

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed a three-story addition to the Buckhorn Office Building for Geisinger Health System in Bloomsburg, PA which provided an additional 37,025 square feet of administrative office space. Construction began in August of 2011 and was completed in 10 months.

A part of the Butz Family of Companies, Alexander worked collaboratively with Geisinger Health System and the architect/engineer, Borton-Lawson, to ensure minimal disruption to business operations that were ongoing in the existing building throughout construction.  Coordination and extensive pre-planning was critical on all aspects of the project.  Alexander also constructed the original 94,000 sf building in 2009 which was designed for this expansion.  Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Co. Completes Phase I of Emergency Department Expansion

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed the first phase of an Emergency Department expansion at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA. Phase 1 was started in January 2011 and completed in June 2012. Alexander worked closely with Mount Nittany Medical Center in upgrading the hospital’s emergency department and providing additional rooms for patients. 

The entire Emergency Department Expansion project consists of a phased approach to enlarge and modernize the existing Emergency Department. The project includes a 29,200 square foot addition and a 14,500 square foot renovation. The Mount Nittany Medical Center Emergency Department services more than 50,000 patients per year so a phased renovation approach was crucial to minimizing disruption to existing operations and ensuring continuity of emergency and basic care services. Alexander Building Construction Receives CMAA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award

Alexander Building Construction Co., State College Area School District and Schrader Group Architecture, LLC received the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award in the K-12 Construction over $20 million category for the Phase I construction and renovation of two State College Area School District elementary schools.

The Butz Family of Companies consisting of Alexander, Alvin H. Butz, Inc., and Shoemaker Construction Co., have won 20 CMAA Mid-Atlantic Chapter and National awards in the last 15 years. Alexander Building Construction Co.’s sister company, Alvin H. Butz, Inc. also won a 2012 CMAA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project Achievement Award in the Higher Education Project Under $20 million category for the construction of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. Alexander Building Construction Promotes Jeff Smith to Senior Project Manager

Alexander Building Construction Co. has promoted Jeffrey Smith from Project Manager to Senior Project Manager.

Smith has managed more than 20 successful projects during his career at Alexander Building Construction Co. for clients such as Penn State University, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Geisinger Health System, Harrisburg School District and Mount Nittany Medical Center.In Smith’s role as Senior Project Manager, he will oversee all preconstruction and construction phase project operations and coordinate estimating and field administrative activities. Alexander Building Construction Completes Project at Deane Center for the Performing Arts

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed a revitalization project at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. The project entailed the rehabilitation of a historic masonry and wood building and adjacent structures to create a contemporary venue for theater, music, dance, lectures, community events, and family programming. Alexander Building Construction Completes Project at Mount Nittany Medical Center

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed an addition and renovation project at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pennsylvania. The project consisted of a single-story addition and renovation of the existing main entrance.

To accommodate continual patient and visitor access to adjacent spaces, the project was broken up into three phases. Phase I consisted of creating and installing the temporary entrance to allow a daily average of over 400 patients, visitors and staff to continue to enter and exit the hospital near the existing entrance, while also maintaining the help desk for visitors during construction. Phases II and III included the construction of the single-story addition, renovation work and removal of the temporary entrance built in Phase I.  Read the full press release.

Alexander Building Construction Completes Addition to Gettysburg Hospital Emergency Dept.

Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed the expansion of the Gettysburg Hospital Emergency Department in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

The expansion included the construction of a 44,000 square foot, two-level concrete structure that includes two triage care bays, eighteen private patient treatment rooms, a trauma resuscitation room, two bereavement rooms, a decontamination room, multiple work pods for care providers and a four bay ambulance entrance. Alexander Building Construction Hires Douglas R. Workman, Project Manager

Alexander Building Construction Co. has hired Douglas R. Workman as a Project Manager. Workman will work out of Alexander’s State College office. Alexander Building Construction Co. is a member of The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co. In Workman’s role as Project Manager, he will serve as the primary point of contact on building construction projects maintaining a clear line of communication between the Owner, the Design Professional, Alexander and the subcontractors. The Butz Family of Companies Announces Two New Positions

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co., announces two new positions in a coordinated effort to improve strategic initiatives and business development efforts in core markets. Christopher S. Magent, PhD, LEED AP, will fill a newly created position, Business Development and Strategic Initiatives Director. He will lead the integration of the business development and marketing efforts of all three companies. Magent is currently the General Manager of Alexander's office in State College, and he will continue overseeing the operations of that office. During his tenure with Alexander, Magent has led efforts that have increased market share each year while delivering excellent service to all clients in the State College region.

Reporting to Magent will be Thomas E. Donley in the role of Business Development Manager for South Central and Eastern PA. Currently a resident of York, Donley is a native of Allentown with nearly 30 years of professional business development experience across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Donley served most recently as President of the York County Chamber of Commerce for 25 years, and earlier in his career worked for the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and practiced law in Philadelphia. Alexander Building Construction Completes Hershey Medical Center Support Services Building

Alexander Building Construction announced that it has completed the new Support Services Building at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The new 37,000 square foot building will accept and distribute materials and supplies for the medical campus. The building provides space for materials management, environmental health, support services, office space, facility shops and a vehicle service area. The new building was constructed over and adjacent to an existing utility service tunnel. Extensive site work and road realignment were completed to redirect campus roads around the building, to provide truck access to the building and to more effectively manage traffic flow of patients and visitors to the medical campus without impacting deliveries and campus operations. Alexander General Manager Graduates from Executive Leadership Series

Stephen A. Wilt, General Manager for Alexander Building Construction, completed the 2011 Executive Leadership Series (ELS), A Program of Leadership Harrisburg Area. The ELS Program is designed to increase awareness of the Capital Region's strengths, challenges and current initiatives, and to provide a platform for program participants to build partnerships for positive impacts in the areas of arts and culture, government, economic development, education, human services and healthcare. "The Executive Leadership Series provided me with an opportunity to gain extensive knowledge of the assets and challenges of the Capital Region and to connect and collaborate with a diverse group of professionals. Alexander Building Construction Completes State College Area School District Projects

Alexander Building Construction (ABC) recently completed Phase I of the State College Area School District Facilities Master Plan. The Gray's Woods project added four classrooms to the existing elementary school and was completed in November 2010. Ferguson Township and Mount Nittany elementary schools were completed in August 2011, in time for the new school year. The Ferguson Township Elementary School project required significant coordination and scheduling because construction on the existing building could not begin until school was out for the summer. It was especially important to the Ferguson Township community to keep some of the original architectural features of the existing building such as the 1930's main entry and classroom façade along West Pine Grove Road. This wing of the school was renovated to become the administrative area. The Mount Nittany Elementary School is an entirely new building built to consolidate the Boalsburg and Panorama Village elementary schools into one school on the Panorama Village site across from the Mount Nittany Middle School. Alexander Building Construction and Mount Nittany Medical Center Receive CMAA Award

Alexander Building Construction Co. and Mount Nittany Medical Center received the Construction Management Association of America Mid-Atlantic Chapter’s Project Achievement award in the Private Sector Projects over $20 Million category for the overbuild addition to the East Wing. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of CMAA covers all of Pennsylvania east of Pittsburgh, Delaware, and Central and Southern New Jersey. The CMAA annual awards program presents awards in eleven categories with one winner chosen from each category. The selection of winners involves an extensive review process which analyzes how successfully a project was managed by the construction manager and the owner. The CMAA judges the specific ways a project is an example of the successful application of construction management principals and standards. It also judges how the specific needs of the project or owner were addressed by using construction management. Read the full press release.

Alexander Project Manager Graduates from Leadership Centre County Program

Alexander Building Construction announced that Mike Sgriccia has graduated from the 2011 Leadership Centre County program. Leadership Centre County (LCC) is an educational program whose intent is to develop community leadership potential in emerging and existing leaders throughout Centre County. Class participants must be nominated by LCC alumni and community leaders and then go through an application process before being accepted into the program. These individuals must demonstrate the talent and commitment to participate in this program and the desire to serve their communities. Through a succession of 11 day-long sessions, class participants are exposed to and develop an in-depth understanding of the complexities of various aspects of the community, including history, health and human services, governance, economy, environment, education, and the arts. Construction at Muncy Valley Hospital and Divine Providence Hospital Begins

Alexander Building Construction Co. announced the start of construction for two Susquehanna Health System projects. Alexander will build a new 2-story addition and renovate the existing Skilled Nursing Unit at Muncy Valley Hospital in Muncy, PA. The enhancements will create a more resident and family-focused experience. The project includes a new dining room and a private family room added to the first floor and a larger physical therapy gym and living room in the second floor addition where residents and families will have more space to enjoy activities and services.
