Alexander Building Construction Co. completes third dining facility at Indiana University of Pennsylvania

State College, PA, October 24, 2017 . . . Alexander Building Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, recently celebrated the completion of North Dining Facility at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA.

North Dining is a new, 31,274 square foot dining facility and is the third and final phase of the University's Dining Expansion Plan. Phase one, Crimson Cafe, was a 13,000 square foot food court featuring burgers, soups and sandwiches, pizza, Starbucks coffee and seating for approximately 400. Phase two was a renovation and addition to Folger Hall, a 48,000 square foot project, which serves international dishes as well as vegetarian food, wraps and salads. The plan is the University's response to an estimated 15 percent growth in campus meal plan participation to 7,000 students. Alexander worked with the University on every phase of the expansion plan. North Dining Facility can seat over 500 people.

"Alexander played a key role in this final phase of our Dining Master Plan Implementation by providing services which included pre-construction design and estimate reviews, construction scheduling and field quality control reviews,” said IUP's Project Manager Jason Mackovyak. "North Dining is considered the flagship of our eat-in dining facilities, which is now the new home for the IUP Dining Administration offices, as well as the support facility for all event catering. The importance of opening the facility on time and within budget was paramount and Alexander was a big part of the project's success."

Some of the unique building features of North Dining include:

  • Main kitchen with walk-in coolers and freezers
  • Special food stations include bakery/dessert, taste of home, open pit, deli, vegan, global fusion, breakfast, greens/soups, beverage, circle dining, ice cream and a coffee shop
  • Additional storage space for kitchen and office staff
  • Back-of-house mechanical, electrical, plumbing, bathrooms, janitorial and receiving areas
  • Indoor, outdoor and tower dining options
"North Dining brings state-of-the-art dining to IUP, giving students more menu options to choose from, and completes the University's plan to improve dining experiences," said Chris Magent, Business Development and Strategic Initiatives Director of the Butz Family of Companies and General Manager of Alexander's State College office. "Alexander is proud to have been a part of this transformational, multiphase project."

The structure consists of structural steel founded in conventional spread footing and its envelope is a combination of brick, stone veneer, aluminum, windows and asphalt and EPDM roofing. The project included the demolitions of Keith and McCarthy Halls and took 17 months to complete. A grand opening was held on August 25th.
